"LEPIOSHKI" BAKING OVEN

Lepioshki baking oven

Lepioshki were made from sesame seeds coarsely ground and made into dough, shaped like pancakes and slapped onto the inside wall of the oven.

When they light up the oven, draught holes are open. When the oven gets hot, all the soot burns off, the drought holes are sealed with sand, and then "lepioshki" are slapped onto the hot wall. As they bake, the edges begin to curl away from the wall and when the dough is baked, it will drop off and is snatched with a wooden spatula.

Fuel for the oven was made from cattle dung mixed with straw, shaped like pancakes, and slapped onto the wall of the winter house. When it was dry it would drop off and was ready to use for cooking or baking.
